1. Protect Your Investment with the Right Design

  • Grounding is Non-Negotiable: Due to moisture, proper grounding and bonding are vital. They prevent shock to birds and people and eliminate stray voltages that can affect animal productivity.
  • Electrical Room: Containing VFDs and other equipment in a dedicated, sealed electrical room significantly extends equipment life and reduces the risk of dust-related fires.
  • Watertight Equipment: Use watertight fittings and the correct NEMA-rated panels with gaskets to seal out moisture.
  • GFCI Protection: Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters (GFCIs) constantly monitor current flow and instantly trip a circuit upon current loss, offering critical protection against electric shock.

2. Never Cut Corners on Code

Cutting corners on labor and components is a recipe for disaster:

  • Voltage Drop Calculations: On long houses (300+ ft), you must calculate voltage drop to properly size your wire (often larger than 12 or 14 gauge) to prevent wire overheating and premature equipment failure.
  • VFD Cable: Always use specialized VFD cable for VFD loads to avoid insulation breakdown, motor failure, and voltage spike issues.
  • Avoid Wire Nuts: Never use temporary fixes like wire nuts in raceways or panels. Use an irreversible crimp or re-pull the wire to prevent a weak point from causing failure.
  • Arc Flash Studies: Stay current on your arc flash studies and labeling to ensure staff knows the proper PPE and safe working distances.

Advanced systems provide optimal growing conditions, but they also deliver critical safety and savings:

  • Redundancy is King: Always plan for power loss. Redundancy—like having backup generators capable of sharing loads across multiple houses—is critical for operational continuity.
